Cell Phones and Electronics Policy (“Away for the Day”)
In compliance with New York State Law, Global Concepts Charter School will implement an “Away for the Day” policy regarding personal electronic devices, including cellular phones, smart watches, Bluetooth-capable devices, and other smart devices. The purpose of this policy is to minimize disruptions to the educational environment for students and teachers. Under this policy:
- K-8 Building: Students will store such devices in their lockers.
- High School: Students will turn in their cell phones upon arrival for storage in lock boxes, to be returned at the end of the day.
We understand that situations may arise where students or families need to communicate during the school day. To maintain a focused and safe learning environment, the following procedures are in place:
- If a student needs to contact their family, they should approach a staff member. Arrangements will be made for the student to use a school phone under supervision, if necessary.
- Families wishing to reach their child during school hours are encouraged to contact the Main Office. Office staff will assist by relaying messages or arranging for the student to return calls at appropriate times.
Progressive Discipline:
- 1st Offense: The device is confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day; the family will be contacted.
- 2nd Offense: The device is confiscated, and the family is called to arrange for the device to be picked up.
- 3rd Offense: The device is confiscated, and the family is called to arrange for a device pickup, as well as to collaborate on a plan to prevent future offenses. At K-8, for example, families may choose to keep devices at home or arrange for a daily turn in of devices to school officials.
To ensure students gain experience with technology that enhances learning, Global Concepts Charter School will provide monitored and filtered individual devices (such as Chromebooks or tablets) issued by the Technology Department.
