Student Employment

Students attending GCCS may work while they attend school, provided they obtain a valid employment certificate and do not work in excess of the number of hours prescribed by law.

Students 14- and 15-years of age may not work:

  • more than three hours on any school day;
  • more than eight hours on any day when school is not in session;
  • more than 18 hours per week, or no more than six days per week;
  • after 7:00 p.m. or before 7:00 a.m.

Students 16- and 17 years of age may not work:

  • more than four hours on any day preceding a school day other than on a Sunday or a holiday;
  • more than eight hours on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or holiday;
  • more than 28 hours per week
  • more than six days a week and before 6:00 a.m.

The building principal may issue an employment certificate.  Students must apply for an employment certificate on a form prescribed by the commissioner of education.  Along with the application, they must submit proof of age; written consent from their parent or guardian; and certification of physical fitness.

The school official who issued a student's employment certificate can revoke it for good cause, and if the student fails four or more courses in one semester.
